Helena’s initial course with the NYO started in December 2006 in Oxford and she spent the New Year practising for the first concerts of the season at St Paul’s Cathedral in London on 5th January followed by Birmingham Symphony Hall on 7th January.
The winter concert was Britten’s War Requiem and also included professional soloists, the London Symphony Chorus and Tiffin Boys Choir. Helena described the whole experience as “amazing, fantastic, one of the best things I’ve ever done in my life!”
The Easter concerts were held in London, Cardiff and Bath where the NYO took on a wide-ranging programme conducted by Sir Neville Marriner covering music from West Side Story through to Tchaikovsky's Hamlet.
Helena thoroughly enjoyed the NYO’s annual appearance at the BBC Proms in the Summer where the NYO played pieces from Kernis, Prokofiev and Shostakovich.
The first concert of Helena’s second year in the NYO will be at the Camden Roundhouse in January 2008.In addition to her own musical studies, Helena has also started giving lessons on the violin and piano to other young musicians. Helena was particularly pleased when one of her pupils won a 2nd place prize at the recent City of Plymouth Music, Speech and Drama Festival.
