Saltmill's History

The creation of Saltmill Park has seen the total transformation and regeneration of an ex-landfill site on the Cornish bank of the River Tamar, in to a multi-purpose, community  recreation site. This 17 acre site now features riverside walks, children’s play area, a youth shelter, skate and BMX parks, picnic areas, wildlife meadows, an outdoor events site, public art installations and now the latest phase has seen the completion of an all weather pitch and changing rooms.

This project has been carried through a partnership between Caradon District Council as the landowner and Groundwork as Project Manager. The total funding package exceeds £3 million, which has come from a wide range of sources including the Millennium Commission, Arts Council England, Sport England, Barclays ‘Spaces for Sport’ programme, Cornwall County Environment Trust (landfill tax credits), Saltash Town Council, Caradon District Council and Groundwork.

Key to the success of the project has been the commitment and involvement of local community members, use of a phased delivery approach and a willingness by the key partners to work hard to find a way forward in the face of obstacles and barriers (including 100 days of rain during the construction phase of 2000!).
